About this course
About this course
A crane rail sits inside a tolerance argument for eleven days. The hold-point fails its first audit, crane erection slips against a customs-critical berth window, and everyone was briefed, updated and informed at every call. Nobody certified anything. An empowerment speech moved the sign-off down a level — with no readiness check behind it — and the project paid for the gap. This course exists because that failure is not a people problem. It is a handoff problem, and handoffs can be engineered.
Empowerment That Does Not Break the Project is a practical Leadership Vault course (~3 hours) for project directors, project managers, package leads and PMC leads with decision authority on multi-party capital projects. Through the Anchorlay Quays rail package case, you learn to rewrite who decides on a package — one decider per decision class, with accountability staying with you — to certify readiness instead of briefing it before releasing control at a hold-point, to run goals-not-methods with intent language at the point of work, to install clarity rituals that survive schedule pressure, and to earn the handoff in an integrated Client–PMC–Designer–Contractor decision at the capstone hold-point.
What you will learn
- Diagnose why an empowerment initiative breaks a project — the empowerment-speech contradiction, leader-follower residue, and permission-seeking language on a live package
- Rewrite who decides on a package using a decision-rights rewrite: one decider per decision class, control moved down while accountability stays with you
- Certify readiness — don’t brief it — before releasing control at a hold-point, using deliberate-action norms and a readiness certification gate
- Run goals-not-methods with intent language (“I intend to…” / “Very well”) at the point of work, keeping oversight and escalation intact
- Design clarity rituals — guiding principles as decision criteria, short early conversations, rules of conduct — and diagnose when they have reverted under schedule pressure
- Earn the handoff at the capstone: choose what moves down and what stays at project-director level, and defend the call
